Surf and Autism at the University of Cantabria’s Summer Courses

Discover how people with autism can benefit from surfing

This summer, I will be taking part as a guest lecturer in the theoretical and practical surf course organized by the University of Cantabria as part of its summer program. The course will take place from July 4th to 11th in Suances, and is open to anyone interested in surfing and related topics.

One of the sessions will be dedicated to autism and the positive effects of surfing and the marine environment on health and well-being. I will be sharing key information about autism and how the ocean can offer a meaningful and rich experience for people with diverse developmental profiles. We will also explore the qualities of the sea, play in the water, and how surfing can support regulation, connection, and participation.

There will be plenty of time at the end of the session for questions, discussion, and shared reflections.

I would like to thank the University of Cantabria and especially Mikel Pérez for including this topic in a program focused on surfing.

I will also take the opportunity to present the Disfrutar el Mar project, a socio-sports activity I’ve been developing since 2010 at the beach, offering experiences in the sea to children and young people with diverse development.

I think it’s a valuable initiative that, within the context of a technical and practical course, we also take time to explore the potential of surfing in social and health-related areas.

If you’re interested, you can check out the full course program and register on the University of Cantabria’s website. You’re warmly invited!
